We offer a variety of residential provision from extended days, part-time (ie 2 to 3 nights per week) through to full-time, depending on the needs of the individual pupil and the family. It is the philosophy of the school that as much learning should take place for the pupils outside the classrooma situation as within it. Sharing, co-operating, being clean and tidy, taking part in recreational activities and independent living skills programms are all things in which the boarding pupils are expected to participate. BOARDING ROUTINE The boarding routine is as follows:
SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES These are offered to all pupils after school hours. There is a range of activities offered which are specifically geared to the aim of securing the personal and social development of each individual. Some of the activities offered include; Football, Swimming, Art and Craft, Pool, Computers, Indoor Games, Trips out, Construction type activities such as Kynex, Bikes as well as many others. In addition to this the pupils are encouraged to engage in the independent living programme, which teaches skills such as cooking, budgeting, shopping and independent travel. EXTENDED DAYS A number of pupils stay in school until 6 or 8 pm in the evening and join the boarding pupils in a variety of activities and the evening meal. The number of extended days a pupil stay varies from one to four nights per week. BEHAVIOUR MANAGMENT The system of rewards and sanctions is based on the premise that all boys are automatically deserving of what we can offer and are valued as individuals in their own right. The residential provision operates a simple behaviour management system, whereby rewards and consequences are awarded dependent on the behaviour displayed. This operates on a daily basis and focuses on the individual needs and abilities of each boy. The system is flexible and designed to recognise and emphasise the positive aspects of each child’s behaviour and the areas in which they are achieving as much as possible. At the end of each evening and morning session, the staff on duty write comments for each child looking at the following areas: · the way they get on with other boys After school each day, the boys have their comments read out to them and they are informed of any rewards and consequences they may have. In this way, the boys are made aware of the positive and negative aspects of their behaviour. To support and enhance the above behaviour system a ‘Point makes Prizes’ scheme is also operating. Simply put the boys can earn points in a variety of areas including undertaking additional learning, completing basic hygiene routines, taking pride in his appearance and area and showing good manners in social settings. In addition to this he can achieve bonus points at the discretion of staff. At the end of the evening the points are totalled and the pupil can decide whether to exchange his points for an instant reward, i.e. extending his bedtime or borrowing unit equipment or save them up for a bigger treat such as a trip to Laser Quest or Go-Karting. STAFFING Having at least three designated members of staff working with the group on the residential unit from Monday PM to Friday AM provides the pupils with a stable and consistent environment that they return to at the end of the school day. This then avoids the confusion of multiple members of staff working different shift patterns all with varying standards and approaches to the work. The residential staff are highly supportive of each pupil and work to cater for the needs of the individual, within the structure of group living. Ensuring all boys have their own care plans helps this. Care plans include a variety of information appropriate to the care of each individual from their current targets to home circumstances. Staff seek every opportunity to praise and reward with the belief that positive is crucial in supporting the development of self-confidence and self esteem. We believe these attributes will underpin the way the boys view themselves, how they relate to others and how they will tackle the everyday challenges that life will throw at them. |
